What does it take to become  a successful journalist? Well, I can say that it takes more than good writing skills. You do not have to major in English, people come into journalism from all different majors and backgrounds. Here at the New York Times, you will find a diversity of people, some went to journalism school, some didn't. i would say take the courses that you like best while in college. If you have a passion for English then so be it. But don't let that limit you.

I can tell you some of the most important characteristics that we look for when we're hiring candidates here at the New York Times. We look for people who have high curiousity about the world they live in. People who question everything but are not cynical or necessarily jaded or biased about what they see. We look for people with integrity that hold themselves to the highest standards. We want journalists who have a passion for the English language, but not only that, we look for people who are able to beautifully but succinctly tell a story.  These characteristics and more are what we spot in our candidates.

There are always deadlines pending in journalism, so journalists are often people who work well under pressure and stress. A go-getter who can work well under deadlines.
